Career College Consortium

The Career College Consortium helps train and hire health and social care workers in the Gwent area.

This group includes Coleg Gwent, Aneurin University Health Board, the five local councils, and the University of South Wales. They work together to create good work placements and learning experiences for students studying health and social care.

The consortium has three main goals:

1. To bring in new workers who are already interested in health and social care, giving a steady stream of talent to local councils, hospitals and care providers.

2. To support local communities by developing skills and talents, following the vision of Health Education and Improvement Wales and Social Care Wales.

3. To Make sure that working in care is valued and respected, attracting more people to join or advance in the health and social care field.

We’ve created a new way to address the shortage of staff in health and social care. This method was recognized by the Bevan Commission as a standout example in 2020 and in October 2019, we received a silver award from Careers Wales for our work with high school students in the area.

Care As Currency

Our College Consortium is working on several projects to achieve three main goals. These include increasing involvement, giving more support, and creating job opportunities for students in health and social care. We’re also focused on improving the skills of people in our communities to be ready for future job needs.

“Care as Currency” is the name we use for all these different projects. It’s like a big umbrella covering everything we do together.

Recently, under this “Care as Currency” initiative, we’ve set up a system to help students in the area get experience by working in social care with the five local councils in Gwent.

Our annual report for 2023/24 gives an overview of the “Care as Currency” program so far, including what we’ve achieved, what we’ve learned, and what we hope to do in the future. We’re dedicated to continuing our creative and collaborative way of working with partners to grow our future health and social care workforce across Gwent.
